Experiencing history in Colonial America

Our stay at Lightwood House was similar to taking a step back into another era. Cliff greeted us upon arrival and gave us a brief history of the home and pointed out some of the very unique details. During the day, we (3 generations of a family ages 18 months to 62) explored Colonial Williamsburg's historic buildings and interacted with its trade people. After a long day of sightseeing, it was so nice to board the super convenient and efficient Jamestown-Scotland ferry to return to this secluded home away from home. This colonial era home is beautifully decorated and spacious enough for all 5 grandchildren (ages 18 months to age 12) explore and experience. The kids could run around and play in the fenced in back yard and play on the swings while we prepared meals in the kitchen that had all the amenities of our own kitchen. We will definitely choose to stay here when returning to this area!

Lightwood colonial house

We spent a week at this fabulous house. It was like stepping back in time. The house was beautiful, the owner was always available for every question/need we had , the grounds are immaculate, the jet tub...oh my word!. Can't say enough about this home and property. My daughter loved exploring all the nooks and crannies of the house. It was amazing to see and read about all the history throughout the house. The owners have poured alot of love, time and energy into this historical beauty!!

Great stay

We had a great stay at the house. Everyone had a great time exploring all the rooms and the surrounding property. There is so much to look at in the house it is like a mini museum. The Kids enjoyed the toys that they found and the play set outside. They enjoyed the hike through the woods too.

Historical Treasure perfect for a family getaway to Williamsburg

As you enter through the inviting double white gates with tall stone columns and continue down the long driveway to Lightwood House it seems as though you are transported to a magical, historical place. I smiled every time I pulled the car into the property, feeling the outside stresses melt away replaced with gratitude and the anticipation of impending serenity. The driveway is nicely kept with light brown gravel, through a beautiful field, surrounded by trees. You immediately realize you have entered a very special, secluded place and for one week this summer we had it all to ourselves.

The light filters through the trees, casting a gossamer glow. You then come upon the home, greeted by coach lights, white picket fencing, brick and stone. To the left of the drive is a trellis that opens to a manicured lawn with flowers and a nice seating area. I sat there every afternoon to enjoy the view of the property and the sound of the wind in the trees. To the right of the drive is Lightwood House. The front yard is enclosed by a beautiful white picket fence, centered is the gate and a brick walkway welcoming you to the front door of this historical treasure. The home is absolutely divine, like stepping back in time. We were visiting Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown to share the history with our girls (age 7 &9). Lightwood was an incredible enhancement to the trip, as though we were able to live and experience a slice of history just for ourselves. Every detail was considered, from the furnishings, glassware, dishes, historical “grandfather” clocks to the period door latches. The historical details are balanced with conveniences of today with comfortable bedding, central air conditioning, nicely appointed kitchen with all you need for an enjoyable stay.

The grounds included a playground for the girls to play, a rose garden with water feature to meander through, a propane grill and outdoor dining area. There are so many special places to explore both inside and outside at this grand property. In addition, there are 100 acres and 2 miles of trails to hike. There was even a fairy treasure hunt arranged for our family, complete with scrolls containing creative clues to guide us through the forest to a bountiful treasure. This was a great home to spend time with family, slow down, relax and escape from the everyday.

Perfect for our family

Our family of 4 adults and 3 children had the most lovely stay. The house is beautiful and the property is nothing short of spectacular. Since we were taking in and experiencing the history of the area, staying in this lovely 18th century home really made us feel like we were living in the moment of the 1700's....except, of course, modern bathrooms and kitchen which had everything we needed. I was worried about having 3 boys with all the antiques but, I did not need to worry. The owners had lots of toys available and the youngsters were able to let their imaginations run wild playing that they they were colonial boys in the revolution. It was a wonderful treat to find this home and live in the history in real time.
