Historical Treasure perfect for a family getaway to Williamsburg
As you enter through the inviting double white gates with tall stone columns and continue down the long driveway to Lightwood House it seems as though you are transported to a magical, historical place. I smiled every time I pulled the car into the property, feeling the outside stresses melt away replaced with gratitude and the anticipation of impending serenity. The driveway is nicely kept with light brown gravel, through a beautiful field, surrounded by trees. You immediately realize you have entered a very special, secluded place and for one week this summer we had it all to ourselves.
The light filters through the trees, casting a gossamer glow. You then come upon the home, greeted by coach lights, white picket fencing, brick and stone. To the left of the drive is a trellis that opens to a manicured lawn with flowers and a nice seating area. I sat there every afternoon to enjoy the view of the property and the sound of the wind in the trees. To the right of the drive is Lightwood House. The front yard is enclosed by a beautiful white picket fence, centered is the gate and a brick walkway welcoming you to the front door of this historical treasure. The home is absolutely divine, like stepping back in time. We were visiting Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown to share the history with our girls (age 7 &9). Lightwood was an incredible enhancement to the trip, as though we were able to live and experience a slice of history just for ourselves. Every detail was considered, from the furnishings, glassware, dishes, historical “grandfather” clocks to the period door latches. The historical details are balanced with conveniences of today with comfortable bedding, central air conditioning, nicely appointed kitchen with all you need for an enjoyable stay.
The grounds included a playground for the girls to play, a rose garden with water feature to meander through, a propane grill and outdoor dining area. There are so many special places to explore both inside and outside at this grand property. In addition, there are 100 acres and 2 miles of trails to hike. There was even a fairy treasure hunt arranged for our family, complete with scrolls containing creative clues to guide us through the forest to a bountiful treasure. This was a great home to spend time with family, slow down, relax and escape from the everyday.
