Our long weekend at the James River Cottage was a true gift. First, the arrangements for our stay and the check-in was just so easy. Deena was a gem...she made it so easy to prepare and settle in once we arrived. As for once we settled in, the cottage was true to the description. I would emphasize that the glassed in porch is a go-to for an entire day of relaxation. When not lounging, we took the kayaks out and ventured up and down the river. Our favorite was exploring Timber Neck Creek...heading west on James River. Here we saw a bald eagle and great blue heron. Of course, I couldn't end my review without sharing the pleasure of watching the ferry come and go. We have not decided when...but, we do plan to return.

We absolutely loved the location and furnishings of this house, both inside and out. We used as an ideal base to spiral North to historical sites (on the fun ferry), East to urban centers and lovely beaches by Norfolk and Virginia Beach, or South to agrotourism. We also loved just hanging out to swim/kayak on our own James River Beach. Deena was always there to help us with anything we needed. Great place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage on the James River! Deanna was thorough with information regarding locality and the use of the property. We loved using the Jamestown/Scotland Ferry to access all the wonderful history sites across the river from the cottage. Jamestown is right across the river and Williamsburg 10 minutes or so from there and then another 20 or so to Yorktowne... We love history and this is the place to enjoy it! The Colonial Parkway is a relaxing and beautiful drive connecting all these three locations.
The cottage is updated nicely with a lovely bathroom and the kitchen is great with all the amenities we needed. Everything is there to cook a meal or have a cup of coffee. A lovely bottle of wine awaited us! We just used one bedroom and the queen bed was very comfortable with cozy linens. We loved the enclosed porch area and especially loved the pier with 2 very comfortable lounge chairs... we so enjoyed sitting on the pier, watching the river and the Ferry boats! Fortunately, we had perfect weather which just enhanced our time at the cottage.
Thank you Deanna!

The cottage in Surry is a wonderful and relaxing getaway. The inside is as neat as a pin and very clean. A lot of effort has been made by the owner to think of everything you will need and enjoy while visiting. The James River is beautiful and peaceful and the outdoor amenities helped us enjoy the outdoors too. Fishing off the pier was so much fun. Just a short ferry ride and all the historical triangle is at your fingertips. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who needs a peaceful get away.

This was a fun getaway for our family of four. The property is so cute, and Deena was most helpful in offering restaurant and adventure suggestions. The house shares the pier with the house next door (also owned by Deena and sits on the same piece of land), and this was the only surprise to us.

We had the most amazing stay at the James River Cottage. The location and views were incredible. Our children enjoyed riding the ferry each day as we headed out for our historical adventures. The cottage was incredibly clean and comfortable. The mid century modern decor was beautiful too! Deena was very responsive and helped us with anything we needed. She would update us via text message about weather, restaurants, etc. We loved our stay and hope to visit again soon!

RELAXING
Stayed August, 2018
Bottom line up front: Would we stay here again? ABSOLUTELY! My wife and I wanted to treat my in-laws to a long weekend at a waterfront property, and this cottage was perfect. Before we could even unload the car, my mother-in-law had her shoes off and was blissfully strolling along the private beach and in the water. This cottage is so well sited. It's level with the beach and pier, and you literally walk out the back 4-seasons room and a couple of paces to the beach and pier. This was very ideal for an older couple to enjoy. They were out every sunrise for coffee and duck watching. The cottage itself: very clean, updated and cute. Pretty much anything we needed or wanted (outside our own personal food) was in place when we arrived. For four adults the accommodations were very comfortable. You will not be bored and please don't let the lack of Wi-Fi deter you. Take this time to "unplug" and enjoy the stay. The cottage location is another advantage. The 24-hour, free ferry to cross the James River is just around the corner--literally within walking distance, so getting across the river to the historical Colonial Williamsburg-Jamestown-Yorktown tourist sites was really easy. I only wish we had more time to better explore everything. We could've easily used a full week. The host: Deena is absolutely a joy and made this stay very easy for us! She makes sure you have as much information as possible beforehand to plan and prepare before arrival. She answered questions I didn't think to ask, spot-on recommendation and was always very responsive. OVERALL: great value and a very enjoyable stay. Looking forward to another visit!

Our stay at the cottage couldn't have been better. The cottage was spotless and everything from the beds, blankets, and pillows to the bath and beach towels, to the appliances, were top notch. The location was very convenient, just a quick ferry ride to all of the area attractions. The kids loved kayaking right off our own private beach and catching plenty of fish on the dock and making s'mores around the firepit at night!! Deena couldn't have been more helpful and gracious. She provided much appreciated information as to directions, local restaurants and stores, and even where to buy bait. We will most definitely be back in the future!!
