THE PROPERTY -- Bedroom: King Bed This 2-story brick cottage perfectly blends historic charm with modern comfort to create the ideal getaway spot. With limestone foundations dating back to 1789 and exposed beams from the 1840s extending over hardwood floors of the living area,
'Fitzgerald Cottage' is steeped in traditional charm for an unforgettable stay. Curl up with a book in one of the leather club chairs in the cozy light of the living space. For a change of pace, have a movie marathon from the comfort of the king bed using the flat-screen cable TV.
When hunger strikes, the spiral staircase leads downstairs to the well-equipped kitchenette, where you can prepare a light meal. Carry your meal outside to the covered front porch and dine at the bistro table overlooking the manicured lawn.
The peaceful pond has Adirondack chairs and catch-and-release fishing so you can waste the day away beside the water.
Venture out to explore Shenandoah National Forest and when you return home, take a bath in the oversized jetted tub beside the seasonal wood-burning fireplace. The tub is the perfect place to simply relax and enjoy a glass of wine.

By the Side of the Road Getaway Lodging was originally established in 1999 as Harrisonburg, Virginia’s first OFFICIAL bed and breakfast business. Founders Dennis and Janice Fitzgerald wrote the City Ordinance that defined the services of a fine B&B establishment in the region.
Now, By the Side of the Road is once again leading the way to 21st century vacation lodging as Harrisonburg, Virginia’s first OFFICIAL Getaway Lodging accommodations. Our original City Ordinance now references “short-term rental” rather than simply “bed and breakfast,” and we are on board! Our luxurious cottage accommodations, which include all the luxurious amenities you expect, have been enhanced to also offer mini kitchens, enabling guests to prepare light meals during their stay, in line with vacation rental properties in high demand by today’s traveling public.
A minimum two-night getaway or longer vacation rental is now available and affordable at By the Side of the Road Getaway Lodging. MORE THAN THIRTY DAYS prior to your arrival date, should you cancel your reservation, we will retain your pre-paid, non-refundable deposit of 30% that was provided at time of reservation.
THIRTY DAYS OR LESS than your arrival date, should you cancel your reservation, we will charge your credit card provided at the time of your booking for the full balance due.
CHANGES – Should you desire to CHANGE the date of your reservation outside the cancellation period, a telephone call is required in order to discuss availability and any applicable charges that may apply relative to the date change.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
If the National Weather Service recommends against travel on your route, we will charge your credit card for the balance due plus a $50 processing fee and issue a gift certificate equal to the amount of your full stay, to be used in the future, subject to availability.

Warm and cozy and so romantic! Best place ever!
We spent our honeymoon in this romantic cozy little cottage. The bed was warm and so comfortable. The fireplace and Jacuzzi was awesome. It is a rustic cottage with all the modern conveniences. The owners were so easy to work with and made our stay the very best. The details to comfort and romance were perfect. It is only 10 minutes to beautiful downtown Harrisonburg which has some great places to eat. Massanutten Resort is only a short 20 minute drive away. We drove to the top of the mountain which had great views and then went to the spa for a massage and facial. Massanutten is a four season resort so you can enjoy it year round. Bryce Resort is only about 45 minutes away which is also very nice. I loved our stay and will book it again for our 1st anniversary! I highly recommend this place. They also have a large manor and several other cottage on the property as well.
