Nancy and Robin Vance will make you feel right at home at Vance's Country Guest House. Robin has lived on the Bullpasture River all his life and is a wellspring of information on local history. Nancy grew up in Union, WV, graduated from Concord College in Athens, and came to Highland County in 1982 for her first job as an elementary school librarian. Thirty years later, in 2012, she retired from that same job!
Nancy and Robin thrive on the country life. They raise a garden every summer, and when February rolls around you'll find them busy tapping trees and making pure and delicious maple syrup. They live only two miles from Vance's Country Guest House.

Robin's great-grandfather built this house in 1885, and his father was born and grew up here. Nancy & Robin acquired the property from Robin's aunt and uncle in 2004 to keep the farm in the family and preserve its rural setting. They began work on the house in 2010 with a dual goal of restoration to preserve the historic integrity of the structure and renovation to provide modern comfort and convenience. Now, with renovations complete, folks can once again experience the peace and contentment of a country home.

This house is a spectacular find for families and those wanting to get away from it all! Beautiful views of the mountains in every direction. House is tastefully decorated with a mix of antiques and modern farmhouse bathrooms. Our kids absolutely loved the rare chance to collect eggs, milk the cow, gather vegetables from the garden, and feed the horses with Robin. Great hosts who have thought of every detail!

This lovely and perfectly decorated 19th century farmhouse provides an inviting setting for getting to know the Vance family through the generations, as photos in each room inform the visitor of the persons who once called this place home. What makes a visit here especially delightful for families with children or grandchildren is the opportunity for hands on experiencing of farm life, including milking a cow, gathering eggs from the hen house and vegetables from the garden, holding baby chicks, pumping water, ringing the dinner bell, and feeding fish in the pond. Hostess Nancy has even provided, for guests to enjoy in the house’s library, a beautifully photographed and written children’s book about the workday of Red the dog, who still greets guests alongside his human friend, Robin. The hosts are as kind, friendly and generous with their time as any we’ve encountered anywhere: this is a real wonder and Highland County, the least populated county east of Mississippi, is a hidden, glorious, and uniqueness rural treasure.

Robin and Nancy are such great hosts. So kind and welcoming. We went there for our mothers 60 year birthday. And she couldn't ask for a better way to celebrate.
My 6 year old daughter loved helping around the farm, feeding the fish, chickens , horses. She had so much fun. My 2 year olds loved watching their favourite old Mac Donald come to life!
Watching the moon rise, sitting by the fire, playing with Yoda, staying on on a rainy day while monarchs fluttered by, birds chirped and roosters crowed was simply blissful.
The house itself was so well appointed with antique furniture including a fully equipped kitchen.
Overall it was a great stay and we cannot wait to come back

My friend and I loved our stay at the Vance home! We felt so safe and comfortable all weekend. The peace of the country is something city girls need every now and then and this place had it! Coffee in the morning on the porch was the best. We couldn't have been happier with our stay.
Thanks Nancy & Robin for hosting!

Our extended family stayed at Nancy & Robin Vance's farm home while we visited Highland County for a wedding. What a stroke of luck to find their place with a vacancy for our dates! Their home is beautifully restored, immaculately kept, and a real working farm. The grandsons enjoyed helping with the chores (feeding chickens, cows, horses, and collecting eggs) and we all enjoyed learning about the history of the area, as well as the Vance family history on that land. Robin was a pleasure to talk with as he generously shared his time and knowledge. I would highly recommend a stay at the Vance Country Farmhouse Getaway!

We enjoyed our stay very much - the peaceful surroundings, breath of fresh air, farm animals, and cosy house. The house is tastefully decorated and well maintained. The Vance family takes pride in their family history which is brought to life through photographs and antique furnishings.
We are grateful to Robin for showing us around the farm, how to milk cows, and raise chickens. Our daughter really enjoyed collecting (and counting) the eggs. We took long walks and jogs along the surrounding country roads. A dip one evening in the cold water of the stream nearby was super experience!
A suggestion which might help to improve the traveler experience: leave some space in cupboards and drawers, in the bedrooms and the kitchen, for guests to store their belongings. All in all, a great experience for a family with kids.

Hi Nancy and Robin,
It was such an amazing experience to spend the long weekend at your place.
I hoped the kids would enjoy the farm experience, and Robin has just made it so way more than we expected. They loves all the animals, especially chicks and Yoda (very friendly cat), saying that their dream job is now a farmer!
We also appreciate how well the house is maintained and impressed with your family story which is well expressed with well-renovated house and lots of antique furniture. We are honored to be witness of your family story and be a part of house history.
Anyway, thank you very much for everything, including the delicious cake you gave us on the table. Although we are leaving US for Japan, we wish to come back to your house sometime in the future. I wish all the best for you.
